The significance of blood and cerebrospinal fluid urea levels estimated after death.

چکیده

Doubt exists regarding the significance and diagnostic value of raised urea levels found in blood and cerebrospinal fluid after death. Harrison (1947), for instance, considers that in the present state of knowledge of post-mortem chemistry such estimations are without value, as high results are often obtained in moribund patients without kidney disease, and he also suggested that post-mortem changes occur which might influence the urea level. Some workers found post-mortem blood and C.S.F. urea estimations of limited value (Polayes, Hershey, and Lederer, 1930; Hamilton, 1938; Naumann, 1949, 1950; Tarsitano, 1950), but none of them attempted to determine by repeated estimations the degree of change in the blood urea level during the important agonal period. It may be of value when considering a cause of death to know whether a high post-mortem urea level represents an agonal rise, a post-mortem change, or urea retention during life with or without renal damage. This paper concerns the relationship of the pre-agonal and agonal blood urea levels to the post-mortem blood and C.S.F. levels, and an interpretation of the results in the light of the clinical and full post-mortem findings. The conclusion reached is that post-mortem urea levels, particularly those in C.S.F., are of value in diagnosis.

Objective(s): The aim of this study wasto investigate the effects of mild hypothermia therapy on oxidative stress injury of rabbit brain tissue after cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Materials and Methods: Rabbit models of cardiac arrest were established. After the restoration of spontaneous circulation, 50 rabbits were randomly divided into normothermia and hypothermia groups. Morphine in Plasma and Cerebrospinal Fluid of Patients Addicted to Opiates Undergoing Surgery: High-performance Liquid Chromatography Method

Background: The prevalence of opium addiction among Iranians is considerable. Since endogenous opioid systems may be altered as a consequence of addiction, it is very important to determine the plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of morphine in Iranian patients addicted to opiates who will undergo surgery. Methods: We obtained CSF and plasma samples from 50 volunteers with an established...

Lactulose efficacy in reduction of nitrogen products, blood potassium and fluid overload in patients with end-stage renal failure.

Abstract Introduction. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem that often goes unrecognized until late-stage disease. Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face with uremic toxins and hyperkalemia. Also fluid overload in CKD patients is associated with rapid decline in kidney function. Lactulose is a hyper osmotic agent and as a prebiotic could reduce serum urea and p...

Determination of Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of Bacteria Isolated from Blood, Cerebrospinal Fluid, and Urine Samples in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Ali Asghar Hospital, Iran during 2013-15

Background: Infections are one of the most important causes of death in infants, especially in developing countries. Inappropriate use and administration of antibiotics can contribute to the resistance and spread of infection. In this study, we determined the antibiotic resistance pattern of the bacteria isolated from clinical samples of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, and urine in the neonatal int...

Hepatic Glutamate Dehydrogenase Activity and the Presence of Ammonia and Urea in the Circulatory Fluid of Channa Gachua in Water-Restricted Condition

Ammonia is the chief excretory product in fishes. However, non-availability of enough of water in the habitat, may lead to the formation of urea, in fishes. In the present study, the possible role of urea formation to avoid the toxicity of ammonia under water-restricted condition was tested in Channa gachua. Circulatory urea and ammonia were estimated in the blood of the fishes and glu...
